MathsCraft problem solving is about showing students that maths isn’t just about getting a right answer. It’s about exploring, noticing, understanding, and knowing that there’s always another question to ask.

During this workshop you will work through mathematical problems that are similar in style to actual research problems yet accessible to students of all ages. You will see how to take these problems back to the classroom so you can experience the joy of exploring a problem not necessarily getting an answer with your students.

No knitting needles allowed

Recently NZQA added a National Moderators report to the maths & stats home page . The national moderators report was last published in 2011 after which it was replaced by moderators newsletters and clarifications. It highlights general issues and trends that have been identified during external moderation of the internal Mathematics and Statistics standards in 2018.

You can also read what I took from a workshop where a National moderator was a guest speaker here.

SSTLG Updates & Level 1 External workshops

Over the remainder of the Term we will be kicking off the years cluster meetings in Auckland with a workshop where we will highlight the impact of the updates to the indicators in the Senior Secondary Teaching & Learning Guides . These workshops are part of a national rollout with NZAMT and the Networks of Expertise.

To help us with planning we would appreciate you registering for the workshop of choice using  this form

December 4th - diary dates for February 2019

Saturday February 9th: Ormiston Maths day

Wednesday February 27th : Auckland Maths Association AGM

Saturday  TBA  Working like a research mathematician - sharing Anthony Harradine PLD

November 27th
As you reflect on the way you taught concepts this year, and conjured up ways to make things easier for your students were you doing them a favour or not.
This book, Nix-the-trix, (free download) recently came to my attention and reminds us why some of those tricks we use may be causing more confusion for our students. It might be time for my upsie down picnic table to go. You may or may not agree with the author however I am sure there will be plenty of discussion

YouCubed have just released their 4th week of inspirational maths – a series of ready to go lessons at different levels. Have a look and share your experiences.

November 5th - by email
A reminder that the closing date for the Kalman Fellowships has been extended to 5pm 9th November.
There are 5 fellowships available for secondary teachers in the Auckland region to work together over the course of 2019 around the theme ‘How can technology be exploited for the benefit of mathematics teaching and learning?’.  Read more here

There are several opportunities to collaborate and share with colleagues coming up - Maybe plan a weekend away and some maths PLD at the same time
Tauranga. Friday Nov 23rd. Bay of Plenty Maths Conference in my experience has always been a day well spent.
Toi Ohomai, Windermere, Tauranga

Auckland
Statistics Day, Monday Nov 26th, University of Auckland, Symonds St, Registration
Mathematics & Calculus Day, Tuesday Nov 27th,  AUT Wellesley St, Registration

Wellington
Annual Symposium for Secondary Mathematics and Statistics Teachers. Keeping up with the Curriculum.
Tuesday December 11th, AM102/104, Alan MacDiarmid Building, Kelburn Campus, Victoria University of Wellington

And with exams just around the corner for juniors as well as seniors, the secondary literacy forum recently highlighted Retrieval practice. Sometimes students do not know that they know. “They need to make theunconscious conscious. If we can help learners believe that they can, and show them the strategies, they will start to blossom and grow to be independent learners. It doesn’t happen in one event, it takes time and consistent reinforcement.
For more on Retrieval practice (practice in remembering what you’ve learnt) and five other strategies for effective learning, have a look at this page on Learning Scientists.” I liked the fact the strategies were summarised onto 1 page.

September 18th (MCAT Day 1)

I hope the MCAT goes smoothly for you and your students this week.

The Mathex season is over for another year however there is a new kid on the block, CALCEX. Calcex is a Mathex like competition for Calculus students. Jamie Sneddon is behind this competition.
Tomorrow is the last day to get entries in for this years’ CALCEX which is taking place at venues around the country on the 25th & 26th September.

Working like a Mathematician PLD for teachers
Anthony Harradine is bringing his Mathscraft workshop to NZ and running workshops for teachers.  There is still space for 3 schools to take advantage of this opportunity in Auckland.
Date: Friday 28th 9am-3pm & Saturday 9am-12.30pm
Cost $120
Venue: Epsom Girls Grammar (Friday) & Faculty of Education & Social Work (Saturday Morning)
Anthony encourages schools to send 2 teachers & also bring up to 3 students on the Saturday morning.
The workshops focus on problem solving or “doing maths like a mathematician”
During the workshop, we will be presented with problems to solve that will prompt independent thought and fuel conversations, we will also see how the ‘leaders’ behave to build a productive and efficient environment in which students can develop their problem solving abilities and confidence.

Let me know if your school is  interested and also fill in the registration form online

  1. AMA Saturday morning  is back on September 1. UoA,Epsom Campus. A chance to catch up with old friends, make new ones, share ideas and get inspired. The theme is around offering worthwhile and cognitively demanding tasks to all students. Researchers have found that students who are given opportunities to engage in challenging tasks make the highest learning gains (Stein et al,2000).
Kevin Hannah, the Bevan Werry Memorial Speaker from 2017 will be opening the morning and following up his plenary talk with a workshop to delve more deeply into the ideas shared. Details of other workshops & the registration form will be available shortly on the AMA Website . If you would like to present at an AMA morning or at the end of year Maths & Calc day email me with details.

PLD Applications
The current round of Centrally Funded PLD applications are due May 25th for Auckland region. Support is available and free to all schools, kura and COL’s.
Typically schools are seeking help when the engagement levels are not high, when learning programmes have become a bit ho-hum, when newer teachers are needing support, when older teachers need challenging, when ERO has identified issues, and sometimes when a new direction or approach is needed. If you are interested let me know and I can point you in the right direction.

If you plan on attending Workshop 1E - STEM Online NZ - a fresh approach to Tables equations and graphs, make sure you register with STEM online to gain access to the resource ahead of time.
STEM Online has been specifically designed for the NZ curriculum by NZ teachers and is full of interactive content with a "distinctly kiwi flavour"

In February this year ERO published a new report. "Teaching approaches and strategies that work. Keeping children engaged and achieving in mathematics". While written from observations in upper primary  this report is full of approaches that will work equally well in the secondary context.
One quote that stood out for me in light of our recent externals was on p24. "a competent mathematician is one who knows what to do when they do not now what to do"

Thinking about workload. How many credits are your senior students working towards? and How many credits do they need? I stumbled across this today on the PPTA website 18 reasons for 18 credits in an NCEA course.

One week to go before our NZ Census.

Sent by the Census at School team this week.

Nau mai, haere mai, from the CensusAtSchool team.

We hope you’ve had a wonderful start to the school year. During this year, we’ll keep you updated with classroom resources to help you teach statistics.

National Census: Did you know that Tuesday 6th of March 2018 is New Zealand’s National Census? Stats NZ has created some great activities to help your students (and their families) understand why we have a Census and to encourage them to get involved.

CensusAtSchool: Your students can still take part in our own CensusAtSchoolquestionnaire until the end of this year. There's a focus on waste, technology, and after-school activities. Register here if you want your students to experience collecting and managing their own data.

Curriculum changes: NZQA has made important changes to the clarifications documents that impact two Statistics standards, 91035 Multivariate data and 91265 Conduct an Experiment. Robyn Headifen has updated her Level 1 and Level 2overviews as a result.

What’s going on in this graph? Each month, a new activity is created for teachers to use with their students, based on an interactive graph published in the New York Times. A fantastic collaboration with the American Statistics Association.

Data visualisations: StatsNZ release data visualizations with accompanying analysis, discussion metadata and related infographics. View the collection.

Have you checked out Dr. Dalyrmples blog? This resource explains how sample variation pops up everywhere.

Have a wonderful week!

October 16th
Fakaalofa lahi atu  this week we celebrate Nuiean laguage week

NZAMT conference
Over 400 teachers gathered in Christchurch for this years conference. A recurring message throughout was to “get the students talking” using; open ended questions, technology, posing problems that could be solved in multiple ways.
These 100 questions are a useful starting place for  promoting mathematical discourse

All presenters resources from conference are online here

MCAT is behind us, if you have any questions from marking you may find the answers from the help line here https://goo.gl/nK62gG.

Centrally funded PLD  is at no cost to your school as long as your request satisfies the Government priorities for your region.

Commonly requested areas of work:
  • Review of the junior curriculum to make it more student centred
  • Development of programmes of work which move away from skills-based to programmes which encourage higher thinking skills
  • Intensive PLD around pedagogy for non-specialist  Maths teachers
  • Using data in the department to improve achievement outcomes
  • Intensive PLD for new HODs
  • Intensive Department PLD around teaching and learning for one standard or group of standards for NCEA
  • Development and encouragement of use of hands on resources in junior classes
  • Integration of ITC and digital learning into your Maths and Statistics programme.
  • Introducing and embedding “Teaching as Inquiry “ into your Department
  • Developing an integrated curriculum from years 7 to 10

The PLD hours asked for can be over a short time (one term) but most applications are for at least one year. This provides opportunities for in-depth work leading to sustainability.

more information how Auckland University can help with your PLD requirements  is available at http://pld.auckland.ac.nz/

1. MCAT

A Reminder that area and perimeter formulae for common shapes is expected knowledge.

As student’s complete lots of practice questions a great strategy for them to engage with as they correct errors is RISK. For information on RISK click here

Have you prepared students for …
going blank (take a pen and write something – close the eyes & take a deep breath)
the noise in the room (blu tak in the ears works well)
nerves (rub the ear lobes)
deciding which question is the best place for them to start on (may not be 1a). Practice taking 3 minutes to read the whole paper

Subash is uploading daily his videos for his students and has made them available to everyone. Share this link with your students https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwTdEHoXvbhL3sDwgAyM6bw/playlists

Learn coach also has revision videos freely available for students. : https://learncoach.co.nz/achievement-standards/num/91027

The Assessment online section of TKI has recently been updated and may provide some interesting material. Eg What to do in the exam

2. Tables Equations & Graphs

The format of 91028 paper is changing. While the standard has not changed the specifications were updated in 2016. We would all love to have a crystal ball, however attached is a document with my best guess as to what the paper might look like.

I have also set up a google folder for teachers to share questions – Use the GIVE ONE GET ONE folder to put your questions in (if you have trouble uploading email them to me and I will see they get uploaded. If every school added just one question we would have a rich resource.

6. The first Christchurch Maths craft festival was held over the weekend, Links to resources from the day can be found on the website http://www.mathscraftnz.org/ . The public talks kicked off with a light hearted look at the ways in which clothing can epitomise various mathematical topics from the humble T-shirt to the elaborate draping of a sari.

The crafts Festival heads to Nelson on July 5th for the Inspire festival and then to Auckland War Memorial Museum on September 9 & 10.

News from The Ministry Bulletin
On 3 May, State Services Minister Paula Bennett announced new Better Public Service (BPS)
targets for government departments including Education.
The new Education targets are to have at least 80 per cent of Year 8 students, by 2021, reaching
the National Standard or Ngā Whanaketanga Rumaki Māori expectations in mathematics and
writing, pāngarau and tuhituhi.
Making accelerated progress in writing and maths is critical for young people to also make
progress in all areas of the curriculum. Good curriculum design, using the Learning ProgressionsFramework and using the Progression and Consistency Tool, are important resources for teachers
and school leaders to plan for students’ accelerated progress and achievement. https://www.ssc.govt.nz/bps-strong-foundation-work-life

What is the relationship between maths anxiety and achievement? Download a recent research article here . It might also make a nice context for bivariate data.

December 6th 2016
1.       Updates to clarifications
2.       External exam feedback
3.       Best Practice Workshops

NZQA have recently published updated clarifications for 91035, 91258, 91264, 91265, 91580. I have updated the A3 Standard Summary sheets & dated them December 2016.  [see the sidebar]

91035: the changes highlight the importance of understanding the difference between sample and population and include example of comments about features.  Also highlighted is drawing a conclusion based upon the position of the median relative to “the boxes’

91265: updates highlight the importance of students having enough contextual knowledge in order to be able to show insight and gives more detail about what is required when discussing features of the displays

91580: the update notes that where appropriate, it is ok to describe the trend in sections. The sections are clearly identifiable and visible over an extended period of time.

To complete a PLD proposal there are a number of questions your proposal should answer. These include
  • What are you trying to achieve?
  • How does this relate to the overall goals or strategic direction of the school, kura or CoL?
  • Who else will be leading the PLD?
  • Details of what support you need?
  • What other internal expertise do you have to support the PLD?
  • What external expertise do you need?
  • What other PLD will you be undertaking during this period?

Aug 18th: Learning Progression Framework released

The MOE have launched a new resource for teachers and school leaders – The Learning Progression Frameworks (LPF). All teachers of students in years 1-10 can access this online resource.

The LPF illustrate the significant steps that year 1-10 students take as they develop their expertise in reading, writing and mathematics, spanning levels 1-5 of the New Zealand Curriculum (NZC).

The LPF builds on the NZC and it underpins the Progress and Consistency Tool (PaCT) for years 1-8 (curriculum levels 1-4), creating a powerful toolbox for planning and assessing progress.

The addition of curriculum level 5 means it can bridge the gap between primary and secondary schools to more effectively support a learner pathway.

The LPF site also contains interactive professional learning and development modules. Feedback from teachers who trialed the frameworks has been positive and the majority of leaders said the modules provided solid support to drive their own professional development.

The learning progression framework is available at https://lpf.education.govt.nz/
Registration is required for access

The Learning Progression Framework is also available from itunes or Google Play. The app contains digital illustrations from the PaCT reading, writing and maths frameworks for years 1-8. Year 9-10 illustrations will be added later this year.

We are extending support for students at risk of not achieving literacy or numeracy credits at NCEA by providing access to two targeted online self-study resources: E-Ako Maths and Pathways Awarua (numeracy and literacy).
 • E-Ako Maths has been extended to include level 5 and is now available free to all secondary students.
 • Pathways Awarua is an online resource for young adult and adult learners who need additional

support in literacy and numeracy and it is now available free for state and integrated schools with year 9-13 students.

May 12th - NZQA - assessor support

NZQA has updated their assessor support page - no Best Practice Workshops have been scheduled for  Maths or Stats yet this year however you can request a "Guest Speaker". This means you can request a moderator to come and talk to your staff about standards of your choice.
I also notice they have added  a  nine week online programme aimed at modifying existing resources to better meet the needs of learners and explore diverse and valid ways of collecting evidence. The fee for this course is waived for 2016.

October 20th: World Statistics Day

From Rachel Cunliffe @ Census at School

Today is World Statistics Day

Watch students at Kapiti College show how they use the inquiry cycle to make conclusions from data.

Today organisations, teachers and students from all over the world will be celebrating the role that data plays in our lives now and in the future.

Statistics New Zealand have launched a Level 3 time series resource to showcase how they analyse data, this presentation was well received at NZAMT 2015.

Other World Statistics Day classroom activities include a movie showing students how they can contribute to a data-driven future, and a poster explaining how statistics around the world are use to make decisions. These could be a great way to generate discussion about how we use statistics in the world outside school.

Also Anna Martin has produced a very addictive game to celebrate World Statistics day, what does your data look like?

Let us know how celebrate World Statistics Day with your classes.

October 19th

This free, 8-week, online course is led by Chris Wild from the University of Auckland was very well received by NZ teachers last year. It provides most of the content knowledge required for teaching NCEA statistics and teaches you how to use iNZight. It starts from the basics and goes beyond Year 13 content.

(1) Introduction
(2) Data on a single variable and comparing groups
(3 & 4) Relationships between variables (bivariate and beyond)
(5) Bias, lurking variables and random error
(6) Confidence Intervals and bootstrapping
(7) Experiments and the randomisation test
(8) Time Series

3. An interesting read

This article is from the SET Journal and is an introduction to the observations and actions taken to begin a professional conversation around student literacy across the secondary tertiary divide. The findings from this article argue that
"At the heart of the gap our students must traverse lie fundamental misunderstandings between teachers across the sectors. Neither group fully understands the extensive changes the other sector has undergone within the last 10–20 years”
